Cawleys and Kettering General Hospital shortlisted for Waste2Zero awards

Cawleys and its customer Kettering General Hospital (KGH) have each been shortlisted for an award at the inaugural Waste2Zero Awards, with the winners being named on 6 December 2017. The Waste2Zero awards are the first of its kind in the food waste sector, being specifically designed for out of home industry to showcase best practice and recognise excellence in the sector. KGH has been shortlisted for the ‘Best Waste Management Project Award (Food)’ which celebrates how food waste is managed. The hospital cares for over 371,000 patients a year with a staff of 3,200 people, and serves 1,800 meals a day to patients. After an 18-month research period, Robin Packman, waste and sustainability manager at KGH, organised the instalment of a wastemaster system which efficiently converts and reduces the volume of food waste on site to a much smaller quantity of odour-free material. What happens to all that Christmas Packaging?

We all know that on Christmas Day it’s all about the packaging; from the beautifully wrapped presents worthy of Harrods’ window dressers; from the mounds of plastic encasing all the toys delivered by Santa to the foil trays crafty Nigella uses to roast her spuds. But at Christmas how much of all that packaging goes to recycling? Last year over 30,000 tonnes of household rubbish was created in London alone with 6,000 tonnes of food waste. Over 1.5 million turkeys were devoured and enough wrapping paper used to cover the circumference of the equator! Recycling this waste not only saved money but reduced carbon emissions, as Edie Waste Magazine reported last year, ‘if every additional wine and sherry bottle, mincemeat and cranberry sauce jar was recycled, London could save an estimated 530 tonne of carbon – equivalent to taking 195 cars off the road for a year’.
