Let's go green this Halloween

What is Halloween about?

Hallowe’en on October 31st is a celebration the evening before All Hallows Day, also called All Saints Day.

It begins a time of year, in the Christian church, dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints and martyrs.

Halloween has evolved into all sort of activities, with bonfires, dressing up, pumpkins, and trick-or-treating. It’s fun to celebrate at this time of year, but if, when we’ve departed this earth ourselves, we want to leave the next generation with all the resources we have enjoyed, you might want to know how to be a ‘greener halloweener’.

Recycling at Halloween

So here are our top tips for recycling at Halloween or 'How to be Green at Halloween'.

  1. Compost your pumpkin.

  2. Use rechargeable batteries in your torches or battery powered candles

  3. If you use a battery powered candle, when it’s run out, take out the tiny battery and put in it your supermarket recycling collection box. Put the plastic candle out for recycling.

  4. Glass can be recycled hundreds of times! Make a spooky light by painting jam jars and bottles and then make sure you put them in your recycling bin, even with the paint still on.

  5. Make fancy dress costumes from pre-loved clothes. Support your local charities by buying clothes from them and recycling them back again.

  6. If you’re having a party, and don’t want to wash up, use products that can be composted like Vegware and when you’ve finished put them in your compost. Ripping them up a bit speeds up the composting process

  7. Make your trick-or-treating collection bag from an old container wrapped in brown paper. Drive the circular economy by either buying a product made from recycled content, or recycle things properly after you’ve finished with them

  8. Use paper to make decorations that can look spookily good! Shredded paper makes great ghosts -check out the crafty idea at the Crafty Crow

The most important recycling you can do at Halloween is probably your pumpkin.  Did you know food waste in landfill gives off methane which is 20 times more powerful as a green house gas than carbon dioxide?
