Refuse Derived Fuel
One of the waste recovery solutions provided by Cawleys is the production of Refuse-derived fuel (RDF), which is produced by shredding municipal solid waste (MSW), which might otherwise be destined for landfill.
RDF can be used in a variety of ways to produce electricity and can be used alongside traditional sources of fuel in coal power plants.
The Process
Recyclable waste streams such as metal are removed from the mix, as are combustable materials, and heavy unshreddable items. The remaining materials are then, dried, baled and wrapped in plastic film to maintain the moisture. The resulting bales can be burned to produce electricity in environments that meet the Waste Incineration Directive such as in the cement kiln industry.
