Autumn 2008 Newsletter

Cawleys new commercial MRF
set to open very soon...

Our new £3.5 million commercial and industrial Materials Recycling Facility in Luton is currently going through some rigorous testing to ensure that the high tech automated sorting equipment and balers are ready for the 150,000 tonnes of waste per year we will be processing! Initial testing of the machinery indicates that as much as 50% if not more of all waste delivered to the facility will be diverted from landfill and recycled.

This new state of the art recycling facility will process and pre treat the waste it collects from all our commercial customers in accordance with the EU pre-treatment directive, which was introduced in October last year. The MRF will use a combination of cutting edge technology such as trommels, picking stations, screens, magnets and air separators to extract cardboard, paper, plastics, wood and metal from the waste.

Here at Cawleys we firmly believe in investing in green recycling technologies consistent with our mantra of reduction, re-use and recycling. A recent study for the European Commission found that separating waste at source followed by recycling (for paper, metals, textiles and plastics) and composting or anaerobic digestion (for organic wastes) gives the lowest net flux of greenhouse gases, compared with other options for the treatment of bulk mixed waste.

The other major advantage of our facility over more conventional methods is that trade and commercial waste producers do not need to segregate their wastes prior to collection. This avoids the need for multiple handling and specialised containers, particularly if you suffer from a space restricted environment.

So by using Cawleys to manage your waste and recycling you can be assured of the most environmentally friendly service for each individual waste stream.

If you would like to come and view our new facility in action please contact Mandy Jacob on 01582 509 613 or email mandy.jacob@cawleys.co.uk

Cawleys awarded ISO 14001
environment management standard!

We have recently been awarded ISO 14001, the Environmental Management Standard which helps companies achieve continuous improvements in their environmental performance.

Cawleys is the only company in the country to offer a commercial Food Waste Recycling Service enabling its customers to achieve the ‘green dream’ of Zero Landfill and, according to Compliance Manager, Dave Merrell, it makes complete sense that Cawleys manages its own business in the most environmentally friendly way too.

“We have a fleet of nearly a hundred commercial vehicles and have taken steps to improve the environmental impact they make by cutting fuel consumption by five per cent. Steps include holding workshops on road skills and demonstrating the basics such as accelerating less and turning off the engine while idling. This reduces carbon emissions straight away and also reduces our fuel bill, so it’s a benefit all round. Less air pollution, less noise pollution, less cost. It is a sensible and effective measure anyone can adopt.” he said.

To achieve ISO 14001 accreditation, companies must assess the environmental impact of everything they do, and implement processes and targets
to maintain or improve on this environmental impact through checks which are carried out every six months.

Government legislation means that many organisations have to meet tough legal requirements such as reducing the amount of waste which goes to landfill. Cawleys complies with around 130 different pieces of government legislation, and part of achieving ISO 14001 accreditation is related to ensuring that all these obligations are properly met.

Kate Cawley, Cawleys’ Business Development Manager, comments; “It’s easier and more reassuring for existing and potential customers to work with a company which has ISO 14001, because they know the stringent standards required are in place. ISO 14001 is often an essential tick box when pitching for business or forming new partnerships.”

Hain Celestial, who last year won “Recycling Performance of the Year” through the Chartered Institute of Waste Management Awards, and is sandwich supplier to M&S, has operations in Luton, Norfolk and Manchester. The company works with Cawleys on their Luton site and their Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Maureen Raphael, commented: “Working with Cawleys has made a huge difference for us; their expertise and services played an important part in our winning of this award and they continue to help us maintain our on-going standards of environmental good practice, so we’re delighted to congratulate them on their own success.”

Hain Celestial has also achieved ISO 14001 accreditation, having gone through the programme with Cawleys.

Meet one of our customers
who we’ve helped go green...

The Riverside Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead has made a commitment to become greener by implementing a range of innovative recycling schemes.

Working in partnership with us, the Riverside Shopping Centre now recycles glass and food waste via dedicated collections whilst plastics and cardboard are sorted from their general waste using Cawleys Materials Recycling Facility (MRF).

Joanna Hall, Manager of The Riverside Shopping Centre, said: “We believe that every business has a responsibility to be as green as possible. Here at the Riverside Shopping Centre our new recycling system not only makes the centre itself greener, but also all of our retailers too. Since we launched the scheme in September 2007 we have already sent over 40 tonnes of glass to be recycled, after being processed the recycled glass will then be used for aggregates and could even end up helping to build a nearby road.”

Ken Golder, Sales Manager at Cawleys, explains further: “At Cawleys we firmly believe that diversion of all organic wastes from landfills is fundamental to all future waste management strategies. We have an exclusive partnership with BIOGEN (www.biogen.co.uk) operate a Biogas plant, allowing us to offer a unique food waste recycling service to customers like the Riverside Shopping Centre.”

Riverside Shopping Centre is believed to be the first shopping centre in the UK recycling food waste and turning it into renewable energy helping to power the nation. Using the science of Anaerobic Digestion food waste is broken down to produce methane gas which is then fed into a generator and re-produced into heat which is used to create electricity for the National Grid. Any leftover materials are turned into fertiliser to be used on Biogen’s own farm.

Joanna added: “Riverside Shopping Centre is proud to be able to not only recycle so much of our waste, but also to create useful end products such as aggregates and even renewable energy. We will continue to review our processes, in conjunction with Cawleys, to ensure we maximise our efficiency for a greener future.”

Please help us raise money
for Leonard Cheshire Disability!

Yes it’s that time of year again, Cawley employees are getting into their athletic spirit ready for this years’ Extra Mile Massif Challenge on the 26th - 28th September 2008.

This years’ route promises to be the most ambitious challenge we’ve taken part in yet, taking us from the north of France past Paris & Fontainebleau into the Loire Valley and Bourges, and on to the Massif Central to finish at the foot of Puy de Dôme near Vichy. The 500 miles will be covered by relay over just three days and as if this challenge were not enough there is an optional opportunity to cycle up the Puy de Dôme, a famous Tour de France stage finish at 1,415m!

Our team, The Recyclers, is hoping their efforts will raise over £10,000 which will be divided equally between the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity and charities nominated by the Extra Mile team.

Leonard Cheshire Disability is the largest voluntary sector provider of care and support services for disabled people. The charity is well known locally for its care home at Ampthill near Bedford, but also provides all manner of support, resources, training and care across the UK.

For more information on our chosen charity visit www.bedfordshireappeal.org

This is now our fourth year of participation in this event, and the toughest yet, as it will be in tribute to our dear friend Gary Godleman, who passed away whilst on the ride last year. The remaining team members returned home early after the tragedy, which will make the finish line this year an emotional accomplishment. As a vibrant and dedicated team member, Gary will be deeply missed this year by all, but with his memory in mind, our team will endeavour to make it to the top.

We really hope you’ll sponsor the team either as an individual or corporately. We’d also like to point out that all entrants have been funded by Cawleys, so that every single penny you pledge goes to the charities.

To sponsor or donate please make cheques payable to: F&R Cawley Limited Cawley Cycle Challenge, and help us reach our target of £10,000.

If you would like anymore details please contact Mandy Jacob on 01582 509 613 alternatively you can email mandy.jacob@cawleys.co.uk

Cawleys help restaurateurs
Boost their green credentials

Cawleys will be showcasing its innovative Food Recycling Round service at this years’ Restaurant Show at Earls Court, London on the 6th - 8th October.

The Food Recycling Round collects food waste from restaurants and delivers it to an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant where it is converted into renewable energy and fertiliser. The service can help restaurateurs to save money on costly landfill and incinerator costs, improve their carbon footprint, and demonstrate their impeccable green credentials to customers.

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is hailed as the future for food recycling in the UK. The process produces only two by-products, a biogas which is converted into electricity for the national grid and a liquid residue which can be used to fertilise the land, allowing food waste to be disposed of in an environmentally sustainable way.

The service requires minimal input from restaurant staff using a straightforward bin system where food is kept separate from other waste products such as card, glass or oil. Regular collections combined with the collection of other types of waste means that the service provides efficiencies in time and money for restaurateurs, while making a positive contribution to the environment.

Early adopters of this new service include Raymond Blanc’s Brasserie Blanc in Milton Keynes and John Torode’s Smiths of Smithfield in London. Joe Dixon, Restaurant Manager of Smiths of Smithfield, is passionate about the need for restaurateurs to recognise their environmental responsibilities

“Much of the emphasis on recycling often falls on householders, but in today’s increasingly environmentally conscious society, it is important that restaurants also acknowledge their responsibility to identify alternatives to landfill and demonstrate to customers that they too are recycling. The restaurant industry is often viewed as an all-consuming industry, at Smiths of Smithfield we want to move away from this image and make sure that all aspects of the business look and feel good, including the waste disposal methods. By using Cawleys service we’re pleased to be at the forefront of change.”

Restaurants wishing to know more about how Cawleys can help them achieve zero landfill status can visit them on stand C09 at the Restaurant Show 2008. Alternatively the Food Waste Management Team can be contacted on 0845 260 2000 or visit www.cawleys.co.uk

Shocking new battery regulations
Boost their green credentials

From September 26th 2008 it is expected that we will need to think, treat and dispose of our batteries in a more environmentally friendly light which is no bad thing!

A new regulation, which is currently being set out, will be enforced on this date to target battery waste in an effort to eliminate the 30,000 tonnes of general waste batteries currently going to landfill. It is expected that the majority of these batteries will be generated from domestic consumers; however, businesses will also be expected to manage their battery wastes. At Cawleys we already have services for the collection of Hazardous battery types and this will not change. However, the Battery regulations will be targeting single use batteries as well so if you need to talk over your requirements so that you can be compliant please call Jason or Alan in our Hazardous Waste Department on 0845 260 2000 where we can ensure that this regulation is not a shock for you!
