Cawleys awarded ISO 14001 environment management standard!

We have recently been awarded ISO 14001, the Environmental Management Standard which helps companies achieve continuous improvements in their environmental performance.

Cawleys is the only company in the country to offer a commercial Food Waste Recycling Service enabling its customers to achieve the ‘green dream’ of Zero Landfill and, according to Compliance Manager, Dave Merrell, it makes complete sense that Cawleys manages its own business in the most environmentally friendly way too.

“We have a fleet of nearly a hundred commercial vehicles and have taken steps to improve the environmental impact they make by cutting fuel consumption by five per cent. Steps include holding workshops on road skills and demonstrating the basics such as accelerating less and turning off the engine while idling. This reduces carbon emissions straight away and also reduces our fuel bill, so it’s a benefit all round. Less air pollution, less noise pollution, less cost. It is a sensible and effective measure anyone can adopt.he said.

To achieve ISO 14001 accreditation, companies must assess the environmental impact of everything they do, and implement processes and targets to maintain or improve on this environmental impact through checks which are carried out every six months.

Government legislation means that many organisations have to meet tough legal requirements such as reducing the amount of waste which goes to landfill. Cawleys complies with around 130 different pieces of government legislation, and part of achieving ISO 14001 accreditation is related to ensuring that all these obligations are properly met.

Kate Cawley, Cawleys’ Business Development Manager, comments; “It’s easier and more reassuring for existing and potential customers to work with a company which has ISO 14001, because they know the stringent standards required are in place. ISO 14001 is often an essential tick box when pitching for business or forming new partnerships.”

Hain Celestial, who last year won “Recycling Performance of the Year” through the Chartered Institute of Waste Management Awards, and is sandwich supplier to M&S, has operations in Luton, Norfolk and Manchester. The company works with Cawleys on their Luton site and their Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Maureen Raphael, commented: “Working with Cawleys has made a huge difference for us; their expertise and services played an important part in our winning of this award and they continue to help us maintain our on-going standards of environmental good practice, so we’re delighted to congratulate them on their own success.”

Hain Celestial has also achieved ISO 14001 accreditation, having gone through the programme with Cawleys. Businesses wishing to know more about how Cawleys can help them achieve Zero landfill status should contact Customer Services on 0845 260 2000
