Eco-eating further benefits
2. Attract new customers and build loyalty
By demonstrating that you are taking care of your food waste you have an opportunity to attract new customers and build a loyal customer base. Restaurant diners want to know that they are making environmentally-responsible choices as well as having a good meal out. Our independent research reveals that 78 per cent of people believe that where food waste ends up is as important as the provenance of the ingredients they eat.

Food waste is an issue that cannot be ignored by the food services and restaurant sector.
How do consumers know if a business is genuinely doing its bit for the environment? Well, the answer is that it’s not always easy to know. But now, by displaying the distinctive mother-nature eco-eating.co.uk membership logo, your customers will know that your business it taking positive action to minimise its carbon footprint.
When customers search online for environmentally-responsible dining choices, www.eco-eating.co.uk will help them to find restaurants that take environmental concerns seriously.

"In restaurants the focus is often on the front end of the business; the fresh food
thatcomes in, what it looks like and what it tastes like. We don't usually look
at theother end of the business and what happens to the food waste that is generated
in a restaurant. By tackling this important element, the food waste collection service helps environmentally conscious restaurateurs get closer to achieving zero landfill."
Oliver Rowe, star of BBC’s The Urban Chef and an early-subscriber to Cawleys’ Food Waste Recycling Round
By working with Cawleys, you can tell your customers: `Nothing on your plate goes to waste’.
3. Stay ahead of legislation
If your business produces catering waste, it is your responsibility to ensure that this type of waste is disposed of correctly. It must not contaminate the environment or be fed to livestock.
The government target to reduce the volume of food waste sent to landfill by 2015 is exerting unprecedented pressure on food services and restaurants. The Defra consultation currently taking place will expand this regulation to ban all catering waste being disposed of to landfill. But certified Eco-Eating restaurants will have met environmental requirements voluntarily. Your restaurant will be ahead of the competition and legal requirements.
4. Do the right thing for the environment
At present, just 0.4 per cent of food waste is sent to AD: the vast majority of food waste from commercial kitchens, restaurants and cafes still goes to landfill where it rots and generates methane gas – 22 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. By increasing the amount of food waste sent to AD, we can avoid this devastating environmental damage. AD, the government’s preferred route for food waste, is a process which is better than carbon neutral produces renewable energy and fertiliser.
Using the AD route will not only help your business to meet its carbon emission targets and contribute with confidence to initiatives like 10/10, but will also enable you to address your customers genuine concerns about the destination of food waste in the 21st century.
